The original name of the rock formation  is "Hyvlatonnå" - which means the tooth of a woodplane. In 2008 nearly 120,000 visitors visited Preikestolen putting it in fourth place amongst the most visited attractions in the area. The plateau from which a person can get a panoramic view of the valley and the surrounding mountains and vistas of green, is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the natural kind in this country. The vast waterway below, and the cliffs that surround it, is one of the most desolate places in one of the least densely populated countries on the planet.
